Maps were produced by the Russian military from 1883 to 1947 and traveled extensively through their technical use in the field. During World War II, many were captured by opposing forces, including German and American forces. As a result, countless stamps from institutions that have passed through them—such as the University of Berlin, the US Army Map Service, and the CIA Map Library—put maps with a unique and visible history.
"Changes in political boundaries, wars, forced displacement, and demographic changes have permanently changed Eastern Europe," says Principal Investigator Teresa Quill, a social sciences librarian at IU. "These maps give scientists a different view of what happened before the war," he said.
In particular, the topographical map of the Eastern Bloc Border project shows Poland, Ukraine, Belarus, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, Finland and Western Russia - all areas that were greatly affected by World War II and of special importance to Russia and the Soviet Union. Importantly, the digitization of the collection allows international experts to access detailed historical maps of their region.
